First women in energy regional conference in Latin America
On May 10, 2023, the first Latin American Conference on Women and Energy: Capacities for Change, Empowerment, Gender and Energy (CEGEN 2023) was successfully held in Chile. This event was jointly organized by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC); the Ministry of Economy and Climate Protection (BMWK); the Ministry of Energy of Chile and GIZ, through the Chile-Germany Energy Partnership in order to create a space for reflection and construction of public and private proposals, from and for the region, aimed at increasing the participation of women in the energy sector. As well as addressing the importance of education and construction of study programs on gender equality in the energy sector.
The first edition brought together important international panelists from Chile, Germany, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Mexico. Through the Energy Partnership (EAP) between Mexico and Germany, three Mexican experts participated: Ms. Nimbe Durán, head of the Gender and Inclusion Unit of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE); Ms. María Luisa Somellera, head of the Secretariat for Energy Development in Tabasco (SEDENER); and Dr. Karla Cedano from the Institute of Renewable Energies of the UNAM, who shared their efforts in mainstreaming the gender perspective in their work.
Seeking to continue the dialogue and exchange of best practices in the region, the excellent news was announced that the second edition of CEGEN 2024 will be held in Mexico, hosted by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE).
